Media Law in the Digital Era: Regulatory Transformations, Judicial Safeguards, and Democratic Concerns in India

Abstract

Digital technology has changed the way India's media is done. The easy access to information that is provided through the Internet and smartphones has made information accessible to everyone, yet also posed new challenges. It has been answered by a large amount of regulations both in traditional media (such as broadcast/print) and in special digital legislation (such as the Information
Technology Act 2000 and its rules) as well as data protection legislation. India's regulatory system is “fragmented” and recently partly “outdated” according to Professor Subhajit Basu, and has been in place for cable TV acts, film certification, IT law, and the newer codes that are being developed for the digital world.
